I.M.U.R.WE

I was you once,
Fearful, small and needing
And the later laughing child
Full of fun and boundless vigor
I am the old black woman
Worrying if the food is enough
Or the rich man wondering if hes
Made a statement or only money
I am the wretch
Whos felt the lash or boot
And I have also worn that boot
In my ugly days Ive stolen, too
And hurt and killed
And shown no mercy nor the
Barest hint of kindness for I
Can be so good at being bad
But I am beautiful, as well,
And so homely no one bears to look
But I have built the greatest cities
And solved the problems of the age
Though sometimes I did nothing at all
Ive starved to death
And died of gluttony
Yesterday I was you
And someone else tomorrow
Im getting smarter, too
From early times and dumb as mud
And through confusing years of those
Whod weave a trap with lies or guile
To leave me less than once before
And now the age is closing fast
The chapters of the angry child
But I am born again in brightness
Finally the loving creature
Worthy of the dawn
