PRETEND

Let's pretend that I don't love you,
Let's imagine I don't care,
That I never think about you,
That you really are not there ...

Then you may as well just
Say the Sun is painted on the sky,
Or maybe that a fish can run
It's all a crazy lie.

Let's pretend I don't think of your eyes
I really could, you know ...
At least as well as dogs could fly
Or jelly beans could grow.

Nor that I never miss your mouth,
That perfect archer's bow,
And wouldn't find a torture
Missing such an angel's glow.

It's easy to pretend I've not been
Once forever kissed
And never held you in my heart ...
As easy to resist

As images of elephants
In pink or green or white,
Or visage of the lunar man
Emblazoned on the night,

Or easy as the seasons might
In backward order bring
A Winter first,
Then Fall and Summer,
Ending with the Spring.

Just pretend that I don't love you?
Yes, of course it could be done
A purging of the brain and heart
And feelings, every one ...

Just a bare and blank condition
With no memory to resist ...
And the picture's painted of a soul
Who just does not exist.
