THE ZOO

Some are sheep,
unaware, even,
of rain on their backs ...
willing to follow
without a whimper
the wiliest wolves,
who care for none but themselves ...
And some are pigs,
who care only for increasing.
Some admire the eagle
but are blessed like the dodo,
and some fly on vultures' wings
to the errors of others ...
Ostriches miss it all.
And the hyenas only know
how to laugh,
having had their fill by others' bounty.
There are doves with no conscience
and hawks with even less
and even owls are only wise enough
to kill with great effect.
But all the warm and furrys
and the rest of feather or fin
mock those naturals of the zoo
in headless headlong rush
to the edge of the cliff.
The animals need no tamer
with whip and chair ...
But rather that inner compass
that always knew the way
though too lazy to remember.
